1. Is being vegan better for your physical and mental health?; 2. Should one raise children with vegan diets?

Is being vegan better for your physical and mental health? No, that’s a myth. You can be vegan, #vegetarian or omnivore and still be healthy or unhealthy.Ex: there are folks who frequently consume vegan take-away, junk food on a regular basis (ice-cream, crisps, donuts etc)

So you certainly do not need to go vegan to have a healthy gut, mind or spirit. In fact one of the top dieticians in London points out: ‘there is good evidence for the #health benefits of fermented dairy in particular, across heart health, bone health, digestion and weight management’. And to which I would add kefir is super healthy for your gut microbes. I’d recommend a more diversified plant-based diet & no that dinnae mean you need to be #vegan . Instead a #diet that has the right amount of calcium, iodine, omega3, vitamin b-12, selenium, and zinc.

As for vegan diet for babies. Contrary to popular belief, vegan diets can be nutritionally adequate & support growth for #infants *PROVIDED caregivers are properly educated & equipped financially & mentally.

If a wee ones #diet is not correctly managed it may lead to wrong feeding regimens, causing nutritional deficiencies and ultimately requiring specific nutritional support or even hospitalisation. For ex. if the child isn’t getting an adequate diet, & it is not properly timed (via #development stages), they’ll need Vitamin B-12 supplements and other forms of #iron and vitamin d.

Latest research, coming out of clinical nutrition, suggests the risk of nutritional deficiencies in the early stages of life is high. This is one reason why caregivers need to rely on professionals for support & guidance for understanding children’s #dietary regime (rather than self-education, even tho that’s important). If not can cause #nutritional deficiencies with possible long-term effects.

Well looks like I’ve run out of space book an appointment to work on U or your wee one 🙂 Hope this helps! Dr Jassal, London Tree Inc.

Having worked in the field of grief and loss for a number of years I truly understand the collective trauma we are faced with as a global community. I have been posting videos and posts via social media in regards to this.

I did however want to share a wee bit on the importance of cultivating habits for brain health. Create emotional resilience & tackle #COVID2019 related anxiety via healthy habits such as art, virtual reading club, photography, etc. Please seek help from mental health professionals if need be ❤️

And Don’t forget to check on those more vulnerable. My 85-year-old friend shared his new found interest in photography😊 with me this morning, “I thought I would share what I see on my walks around my neighbourhood. We do live in a beautiful world”. 💕

New Year Resolutions: Yay or Nay?

It is probably not very fair to use New Year’s Day to recall minor moments of what we need to work towards and/or let go of.  Of course, for humans, there is a legitimate impulse to renew or remove elements of life that either work towards our betterment or work against the grain of our subjective selves. Yet, a basic question should be asked: what do New Year resolutions offer? Below are some reflections that may serve as take-home points to start with.

Reflections:

1. Short-term goals:  when we set short-term goals we trigger dopamine release in brain which gives a pleasure response when it is ticked off our list so to say. Ex: short-term i.e. walk every morning and evening for one week. It costs $0 to walk outside.
2. Healthy boundaries: define limits at work, home and in relationships.
3. Gut-Brain axis: think of the gut as your second brain which involves direct and indirect pathways between cognitive and emotional centres. Diet, what you eat, plays a critical role in understanding the neurobiology of stress. So, eat more nourishing meals (increasing good bacteria) and less-take away.
4. Self-care & wellness: self-care is a catch-all term these days, yet it is best understood as simply taking care of emotional, spiritual, and physical needs be that through nourishing the body with healthy or home-made meals or just simply taking 30 minutes – 1 hour for yourself
5. Resist negative talk: start to pay attention to when you’re criticising yourself; and begin to change the negative thought into something more compassionate. Our habits, including toxic negative self-talk, is an area that is often overlooked in our mental wellness goals and yet plays a key role in elements of human suffering.

I like to think of New Year resolutions as an experiment in self-growth that begins with a walk-through one’s subjective self in order to stitch together narratives of the past, present and future. So as you sort through worries, ambitions for the future, stress and/or anxiety take a moment to reflect on tapping into your unconscious to engage in meaning making activity that will nourish your mind, body and spirit. As we end 2019 and enter a new decade, I hope you will consider being kinder to yourself everyday of the year, and perhaps that is one resolution we all need to make.

For those of you feeling a twing of sadness this time of year: whilst the season of Christmas arrives in a pretty red (and green) package so do many triggers especially for those facing Christmas alone this year due to grief & loss. It can be for some, and myself included, a daunting prospect. A few tips to get through the season: 1. Be kind to yourself & ask for help if you need it; 2. Give yourself permission to enjoy what is new – invented traditions & rituals help soothe the grieving heart; 3. Don’t use food (overeating or not eating) as your emotional crutch; 4. Overworking (yes, I myself am guilty of this) generally puts the body/mind at risk because of not recognising the emotional rawness of a kaleidoscopic of feelings – fill your life with self-care including the right to have fun; 5. Lean into pain, acknowledge the triggers. There is no warning sign when something is going to provoke a strong emotional reaction so its best to learn & get familiar with what your triggers are so you can change their impact via narrative re-structuring i.e. sites & sights of vulnerabilty to lessen power over thoughts; 6. Life is changed & that can be scary. Let yourself feel what you need to feel, but don’t feel guilty about enjoying a new everyday that doesn’t include your loved one. Focus on your strengths & the power of your body & mind to create a new embodied space of power. Hope this helps! Sending love & strength, Dr. Jassal (proud grandaughter of a, recently departed, beautiful soul).❤ #grief #griefsucks #griefandloss #griefdreams #breakup #loss #life #change #heartbreak #relationshipgoals #goodgrief

Well said Moe et al, It is prudent for counselors in the 21st century to integrate wellness concepts into conceptualization and treatment planning with their clients given the historical emphasis on holistic wellness within counseling and recent developments that support empirically the connection between wellness, health, and life-satisfaction.

Seeking out a counsellor/psychologist/psychiatrist tips:
1. No one-size-fits all. Check out their website or give them a phone call.
2. Find out the approaches & modalities they rely on.
3. Good rapport is key to successful treatment. As is empathy, respect and a ‘safe place’ for treatment.
4. One study found that ‘people determine whether or not they can trust someone within 50 milliseconds of meeting them’. So ask yourself if you trust trust the counsellor or clinician. Allow your gut feeling to guide you.
5. After a few weeks, or sessions, you should notice change. If not then you need to change the person you’re working with. An effective therapist will or should ideally do more than nod their head.

I recently read a colleagues post on self-care & my brief thoughts on this topic are as follows: compassion fatigue amongst counsellors, psychologists/psychiatrics, and mental health professionals is a growing concern. Integrating the ‘art of self-care’, if you will, is a skillful balance wherin tending to ourselves calls for a motivational approach to address the vulnerability of our everyday professional lives. There have been movements to address stigma, but will persist until those who are in pursuit of mental wellness continue to challenge and resist hegemonic definitions. In sum, a culture of self-care certainly exists, without a doubt, but it is through facilitating a culture of self-empowerment where we may see real change occur in our everyday. #opinionofanarchist 😚 #mentalhealthmatters #counsellors #trauma #selfcare #wellnessmatters #mentalhealth #wanderlust #wellnessblogger #chakra #selfcare #bc #selflove #fraservalley #mindful #ayurveda #mindbody #vancitybuzz #playtherapy #griefandloss #psychologist #fraservalley #petloss #trauma
